Stawell’s Zayne Hall has secured himself a seat at the Australian Poker League Million competition. The four-day event will be in Sydney from March 2 to 11, 2019. Hall won the Ballarat Poker Champs on October 20 – and first prize included a ticket to the national competition. Hall entered the $100 buy-in event to try his luck at taking out the first place prize at the regional event. “It was a good win. I went for the experience, but to win – it was great,” he said. The 18-year-old has been playing poker face-to-face since the start of the year and won his first competition on May 3. “Poker is a really enjoyable and it’s a great way to wind down after work. It’s also something to do on the weekend,” he said. Australian Poker League is the world's largest free-to-play poker league, hosting casino-standard poker games at local pubs and clubs throughout Australia. Hall said he played poker twice a week “generally, in the Stawell and Ararat areas”. “Poker is a hobby anyone can have. Anyone can play poker,” he said. Australian Poker League Million is an opportunity for poker players to experience a poker room while competing for the $250,000 minimum first place prize. “It’s going to be fantastic. I’m really excited to go and can’t wait for the experience,” he said. The league also hosts a players’ party – a night for all players to attend. In the lead-up to the event, Hall said he would try to play at a higher standard competition. “I wouldn’t mind playing in Melbourne and in a few bigger tournaments to broaden my range on the knowledge of the game,” he said. It will be a whole new experience for Hall as he is unaware of anyone he plays poker with having participated in the event. “I don’t know of anyone that has gone to the event within the area, so it will be all new to me. I will do as much research as I can before I go, so I have an idea on what to expect,” he said. Poker players across the country can opt to buy into the competition, or qualify at events. “It is a $1500 buy-in for the event so I feel very lucky I was able to secure a spot in the competition,” he said.
